Meet The Cast: James

How did you prepare for your audition?

I did some biographical research into Peron and watched different portrayals of the character, including Jonathan Pryce's version in the film, also starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas.

What’s the most challenging part about your role?

There are some very challenging rhythms and phrases to get my tongue around - but having to listen to my name get chanted over and over again tests the concentration!!

What’s the funniest things that’s happened in rehearsal?

Easy answer. When having to lift Jo as a dead weight off of the ground, I completely got it wrong. I fell backwards with Jo landing on top of me which left just my legs poking out from under her......ruined the beautiful moment that we had created but gave the cast a good laugh!

What’s the scariest thing that has happened to you in any performance/rehearsal?

In my last theatre role playing Sweaty Eddie in Sister Act, I had two costume changes on stage in front of the audience. This involved wearing three different costumes at the same time which were ripped off one by one. The scary moment was hoping that my trousers didn't fall down - I had to stiffen my legs one night to make sure they didn't and thankfully, I managed to keep my dignity every show.

Which musical theatre performer do you admire and why?

I'm a big fan of Earl Carpenter. He has played some of my favourite parts on stage including the part I would give my right arm to play, Javert in Les Miserables - and of course Juan Peron.

Who is the funniest person in the cast and why?

Definitely Hugh Chudley. Oh sorry, I misunderstood the question. I thought it was "funny looking"......

Apart from performing, what’s another skill that you have?

I spend a lot of time with deaf people so I can speak British Sign Language.

What night of show week is your favourite?

I love the first night of the week. All the build up of excitement and working with the amazing orchestra. However it is the complete opposite feeling to the end of the week when I don't want the show to end.

JamesBillington7Why should people come and watch the show?

It is a hugely emotional show with a gripping story but for me, it's the music. In my opinion this is Andrew Lloyd Webber's best work.

'Evita' comes to Exmouth Pavilion from the 22nd to 26th November 2016. '#VotePeron' and buy your tickets from the box office on 01395 222477 or online at
