Show Week Ahoy!

2016music1Preparations for EMCo's swashbuckling Broadway version of "The Pirates of Penzance" step up a gear tomorrow as we board the Exmouth Pavilion ready for show week.

As always, this production is shaping up to be a fabulous team effort. The dedicated members of the company are busy with the final stages of adjusting costumes, assembling scenery, organising props, promoting the show and, most importantly, final [ractice runs of the show, to ensure the usual high quality production that this company prides itself on.

2016Pirates-AdeleBrammer-smallThere are several new members taking part in "Pirates" and they were keen to tell me about their first "EMCo experience"! Adele Brammer told me how much she has enjoyed the rehearsal process. "I always look forward to the next rehearsal because everyone is so friendly and encouraging. We all work very hard as a team but have loads of fun at the same time".

Charlie01-emailJack Powell and Charlie Leigh, two other new members, have thrown themselves into the production with total commitment. "It has been a fantastic experience and I cannot wait to get on stage and share it with the public" said Jack. Charlie, a former member of Centre Stage was cast in the lead role of Frederic and has risen to the challenge brilliantly. "I have loved being a part of this show" says Charlie, "the whole company work very hard and have made me feel so welcome. If anyone out there is thinking about doing something like this I would totally recommend that they come and give it a go!"

Broadway Edition: What's the fuss?

2016music1As Exmouth Musical Theatre Company gear up for their June production of 'Pirates of Penzance', the exciting changes that make for the 'Broadway Edition' are becoming more evident with every rehearsal. 2016music2From the extra verses, choruses and reprises throughout the score, to the addition of some completely new pieces, Gilbert and Sullivan's reworking of their own show promises devotees a traditional G & S experience whilst also containing enough additional enrichments to have enthusiasts seeing the show anew.

2016music3'Broadway Pirates' contains two completely extra songs – “Sorry Her Lot” from HMS Pinafore and “It Really Doesn’t Matter” from Ruddigore.

2016music4The original overture is replaced by a short introduction that leads straight into the action, and a whole host of songs from the original musical now contain dance breaks and opportunities not originally scored. This leads to what is often described as more swashbuckling leading men, with more musically comedic interpretations throughout the characterisations.

2016music5With additional orchestral material, a number of additional key changes build the emotional pace of the score, and allow for several new reprises, including notably the Major General's song at the end, as part of the original 'New York' ending that had been removed over time. 2016music6This rescored version of 'Pirates of Penzance' was universally well received, gathering seven Tony award nominations (and winning three), eight Drama Desk Awards (winning five) and a bevy of glowing reviews.

2016music7We hope you enjoy our performance of this slapstick, touching and heart-warming tale, as EMCo share the Broadway 'Pirates of Penzance' with Exmouth this June

 productionhistory

What's most challenging about being the choreographer?

It is a very time consuming job and it can be tricky to come up with original moves that all the people in the numbers are capable of doing as everyone has different levels of ability!

2016Pirates-MikeH01This week, following her recent interviews with Mike 'The Major General' Killoran and Frankie 'Mabel' Parry, Rachel caught up with Mike Hamilton, who plays Samuel; second in command to the Pirate King himself. See what the brigand had to say for himself below...

How long have you been in Emco?

I was a member way back in 2002 but had a long break before returning for Witches of Eastwick in 2015

Whilst playing the Dentist in Little Shop of Horrors, I got lost in the theatre when required to enter through the auditoriam.  I couldn't find my way back to the stage and left the cast having to ad lib for what seemed like an age as I panicked trying every door I could - what a way to make an entrance !!

Meet The Cast: Mike Killoran, 'The Major General'

2016Pirates-Mike01Our impending production 'Pirates of Penzance' has continued to gather momentum. Following last week's interview with Frankie Parry, this week Rachel Hiland spoke to 'the very model of a modern major general', Mike Killoran.

How long have you been in Emco?

Anne (my wife) and I joined Exmouth Operatic Society, which then became EMCO in 1976, so this is our 40th year.

What is your favourite role you have played? Why?

I think my favourite was Fagin because it is so iconic. Also Anne was playing Nancy and Dave (my son) was the Artful Dodger.

What is the funniest thing that has happened to you during a show/rehearsal?

Uttering a rude word on stage, I meant to say shut or shot but instead used another vowel, this caused Val Clarke and I to collapse with laughter!

Give a brief description of the character you are playing.

I am the very Model of a Modern Major General - apparently the description Model means a small imitation of the real thing.

2016Pirates-Mike02What musical sums up your life? Why?

Fiddler on the Roof, I’ve often dreamed on being a Rich Man

What would your character use as a chat up line?

Have you ever Sat a Gee?

What's most challenging about your role?

Remembering all the words in the Patter Song

What do you love/hate about your character?

I have always enjoyed dressing up in Uniform, actually it’s been a lifetime obsession

Tell me why people should come and watch this show.

Live Theatre is really good fun! We are a good society; we have a very strong cast who will bring out all of the humour that the show has. I really believe that this is a show for all ages, with good fun, good singing and great live entertainment.
